“Mr” = 「さん」？ “Mr” と「さん」の違いについて- 前編

Differences between “Mr” and 「さん」- part 1

“Mr”（または “Mrs”, “Miss”, “Ms”）は、しばしば「さん」に相当する英語と考えられています。

“Mr” (or “Mrs”, “Miss”, “Ms”) is often considered to be the English equivalent of 「さん」.

たしかに、同じように使われることが多いですね。

It is true that they are often used in the same way.

しかし、いくつかの重要な違いがあるので、注意が必要です。

However, there are some key differences which you should be aware of.

不自然に聞こえたり、子供っぽく聞こえたり、意図せず相手を不快にさせる可能性もあるので、敬称を正しく使うことは重要です。

違い1：相手の姓を使わないなら、敬称を使わないでください!

Difference 1: If you don’t use someone’s surname, don’t use a title!

“Mr”（または “Mrs”, “Miss”, “Ms”）は、姓に対して使用されます。

“Mr” (or “Mrs”, “Miss”, “Ms”) is used with surnames.

“Mr”（または “Mrs”, “Miss”, “Ms”）は敬称であり、フォーマルなものです。姓を使うのもフォーマルなので、この2つは一緒に使うことになります。

“Mr” (or “Mrs”, “Miss”, “Ms”) are titles, which are formal. Using surnames is also formal, so the two go together. 

姓のない敬称（例えば “Mr John”のように下の名前だけ）を使うのは、奇妙に聞こえます。

Using a title without a surname (i.e. just a first name, for example “Mr John”) sounds strange.

IMPORTANT RULES: 重要なルール

ルール1：姓がない場合は、敬称を使いません。

Rule 1: If there is no surname, don’t use a title.

ルール2：姓だけ（下の名前がない）の場合は、敬称を使用しなければなりません。(ただし、有名人について三人称で語る場合は例外です）。

Rule 2: If there is just a surname (with no first name), you must use a title. (An exception to this rule is if you are talking about a famous person in the third person).

OK Mr Smith

NG Smith

ルール3：姓と下の名前の両方がある場合、敬称を使用するかどうかを選択できます。

Rule 3: If there is both a first name and a surname, you can choose whether to use a title or not.

OK Mr John Smith

もう少し詳しく見てみましょう。

Let’s look a little more closely:

NG Mr John

ここには姓がないので、これはルール1を破っています。とても奇妙で、少し子供っぽい感じがします。丁寧に言おうとしているように聞こえるが、英語の敬称がどのように機能するのかよく分かっていないようです。ネイティブでない人が言いそうなことですね。

There is no surname here, so this breaks rule 1. It sounds very strange, and a little childish. It sounds like the speaker is trying to be polite, but doesn’t really understand how English titles work. It sounds very much like something a non-native speaker would say.

“Teacher John” も不自然です。子供が言いそうなことです。もし英語の先生が自分の名前をJohnと言ったら、Johnと呼べばいいのです。“Teacher John” はネイティブスピーカーにはやや耳障りな響きです。

“Teacher John” is unnatural too. It sounds like something a child would say. If your teacher tells you his name is John, just call him John. “Teacher John” sounds somewhat jarring for native speakers.

OK John

これは自然です。姓も敬称もありません。

This is natural. No surname, no title.

OK Mr Smith

ここでは敬称と、姓があります。これは自然に聞こえますね。

Here we have a title, and a surname. This sounds natural.

NG Smith

ここでは、姓はあっても、敬称や下の名前はありませんでした。これは上記のルール2を破ることになります。姓だけ（下の名前がない）場合は、敬称を使用しなければなりません。

Here were have a surname, but no title or first name. This breaks rule 2 above. If there is just a surname (with no first name), you must use a title.

姓だけで、下の名前も敬称もないのは失礼にあたります。これが許されるのは、教師が若い生徒に話しかける場合、あるいは高位の兵士が低位の兵士に話しかける場合だけです。

Using just a surname without a first name or title sounds rude. The only time this is acceptable is a teacher talking to a young student, or a high-ranking soldier talking to a lower-ranking solider.

このルールには2つの例外があります。

There are two exceptions to this rule:

例外1.

昔は、男友達同士は姓だけで呼び合うことがよくありました。シャーロック・ホームズの本を読んだことがある人なら、主人公のシャーロック・ホームズとジョン・ワトソンの二人が、いつもお互いの姓で呼び合っていることに気づくでしょう。「ホームズ」「ワトソン」。15年ほど前、BBCがこの本をもとに、現代を舞台にしたテレビドラマを制作しました。現代人は下の名前で呼び合うのが普通なので、このドラマでも主人公二人は常に下の名前で呼び合います。「シャーロック」「ジョン」。

A long time ago, male friends often used to call each other by only their surnames. If you’ve ever read the Sherlock Holmes books, you’ll notice that the two main characters, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, always call each other by their surnames: “Holmes” and “Watson”. About fifteen years ago the BBC made TV drama based on the books which is set in modern times. Modern men usually call each other by the first names, so in this TV drama, the two main characters always call each other by their first names: “Sherlock” and “John”.

例外2.

有名人について三人称で話す場合、姓だけであることが自然です。これは、スポーツ選手、作家、俳優、歌手、政治家など、どんな有名人にも当てはまります。例えば、アメリカの大統領について三人称で話す場合、“Mr Biden”ではなく、“Biden”と言う方が自然です。もちろん、バイデンに直接話しかける場合は、常に“Mr Biden”を使うべきでしょう。

If you are talking about a famous person in the third person, it is natural to just use the surname. This applies to any kind of famous person: sportspeople, writers, actors, singers, politicians, etc. For example, if you are talking about the American president in the third person, it’s more natural to say “Biden”, rather than “Mr Biden”. Of course, if you are talking to Biden directly, you should always use “Mr Biden”.

OK Mr John Smith /  OK John Smith

姓と下の名前を併記したフルネームです。これは敬称をつけてもつけなくてもかまいません。もちろん、敬称があれば、よりフォーマルな印象を与えます。

This is a full name, with both a first name and a surname. It is acceptable to use this both with and without a title. Of course, a title makes it sound more formal.

二人称で話す場合、下の名前と姓の両方を使うことはあまり一般的ではありません。下の名前だけ、あるいは姓と敬称の両方を使うのが一般的です。

When speaking in the second person, using both a first name and a last name is not so common. It’s more common to use just a first name, or just a surname plus title. 

下の名前と姓の両方を使うのは、学校での点呼、緊急時の点呼、空港で乗客の名前を呼ぶなど、アナウンスをするときに最もよく使われる方法です。

Using both a first name and last name is most commonly used when making announcements. for example roll-call at school, roll-call in an emergency situation, calling a passenger’s name at airports, etc.

「Mr」（あるいは「Mrs」、「Miss」、「Ms」）を姓に限定して使うことは、「さん」との大きな違いの一つでしょう。

Using “Mr” (or “Mrs”, “Miss”, “Ms”) exclusively with surnames is probably one of the biggest differences between “Mr” and 「さん」.
