If you ever travel abroad or do business with other countries, of course it’s important to understand the local currency, and understand how to read and say prices.

海外旅行や海外との取引をすることがあれば、当然、現地の通貨を理解し、値段の読み方や言い方を理解することが大切です。

Not understanding the local currency could lead to misunderstandings, getting ripped off, or unsuccessful business negotiations.

現地通貨を理解していないと、誤解を招いたり、ぼったくられたり、商談がうまくいかなかったりすることがあります。

Pounds…. and pence!

ポンド……と……ペンス!

First of all, let me show you what’s in my wallet.

まず、私の財布の中身をお見せしましょう。

I’m British, so I use pounds.

私はイギリス人なので、ポンドを使います。

This is a one pound coin. (£1)

これは1ポンド硬貨です。

At the time of writing, £1 is about ¥160.

本稿執筆時点では、1ポンドは約160円

These are five pound notes and ten pound notes (£5 and £10).

5ポンド紙幣と10ポンド紙幣です。

In the future, the bank of England will print money with the new King on it, but for the moment we are still using money with a picture of the Queen. The new King cares about the environment a lot, so he doesn’t want to waste paper.

将来的には、イングランド銀行は新しい国王が描かれたお金を印刷する予定ですが、今のところはまだ女王の絵が描かれたお金を使っています。新国王は環境をとても大切にされているので、紙を無駄にしたくないのでしょう。

There are also twenty pound notes and fifty pound notes.

20ポンド札、50ポンド札もあります。

Be careful with the pronunciation of “pound”. In Japanese katakana it’s “pondo”, but this is not correct. It sounds more like “paund”.

“Pound” の発音には注意が必要です。日本語のカタカナでは「ポンド」ですが、これは正しくありません。どちらかというと「パウンド」に聞こえますね。

This coin is 1 penny. この硬貨は1ペニーです。

A penny is a very small unit of currency.

1ペニーはとても小さな通貨単位です。

The plural is irregular 

複数形は不規則 

1 penny

2 pence

100 pence = £1

100 ペンス＝1ポンド

This coin is 2 pence. このコインは2ペンスです。

In everyday conversation, people say “p”, instead of “penny” or “pence”.

日常会話では、「ペニー」や「ペンス」ではなく、「p」と言います。

This is five pence (5p). これは5ペンス（5p）です。

This is ten pence (10p). これは10ペンス（10p）です。

This is twenty pence (20p). これは20ペンス（20p）です。

This is fifty pence (50p). これは50ペンス（50p）です。

Dollars and cents

In America there are also 2 units of currency.

アメリカでも、通貨単位は2つあります。

Dollars ($)

Cents (¢)

At the time of writing, 1 American dollar is about ¥130.

本稿執筆時点では、1アメリカドルは約130円です。

１ドル　＝　１００セント

I have some American money that I saved from when I went on vacation:

旅行に行った時に貯めたアメリカのお金があるんです。

This is a dollar:

これは1ドルです。

This is a cent:

これは１セントです。

There are coins for 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, and 50¢.

5セント、10セント、25セント、50セントの硬貨があります。

There are bank notes for $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.

1ドル、2ドル、5ドル、10ドル、20ドル、50ドル、100ドルの紙幣があります。

Many other countries use dollars, for sample Canada, Australia and New Zealand. 

カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドなど、多くの国でドルが使われています。

However, the value of the dollar is different in each country, the coins and bank notes are different, so it is not the same currency. 

しかし、ドルの価値は国によって異なり、硬貨も紙幣も違うので、同じ通貨とは言えません。

You can’t, for example, use Canadian dollars in New Zealand.

例えば、ニュージーランドではカナダドルを使うことはできません。

Euros and cents

ユーロとセント

On the other hand, you absolutely can use euros in many different countries!

一方、ユーロはいろんな国で絶対に使えます。

Most countries which are members of the EU use Euros. (But not all. The UK used to be in the EU but we never used euros because we have too much pride in being British so we kept the pound).

EUに加盟しているほとんどの国がユーロを使用しています。(しかし、すべてではありません。イギリスはかつてEUに加盟していましたが、イギリス人としての誇りが強すぎるため、ユーロを使うことはなく、ポンドのままでした）。

There are 2 units of currency:

通貨単位は2つです。

ユーロ　Euros (€)

セント　Cents (¢)

This is a €1 coin:

こちらは1ユーロ硬貨です。

This is a 50¢ coin:

これは５０セント硬貨です。

There are banknotes for €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200, €500

5ユーロ、10ユーロ、20ユーロ、50ユーロ、100ユーロ、200ユーロ、500ユーロの紙幣があります。

There are coins for 1¢, 2¢, 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 50¢, €1, €2

1セント、2セント、5セント、10セント、20セント、50セント、1ユーロ、2ユーロの硬貨があります。

The banknotes have the same design for each country.

紙幣は、全ての国で同じデザインになっています。

On the front the coins are the same for all countries, and on the back there is a different design for each country. 

表はどの国のコインも同じで、裏は国ごとに違うデザインになっています。

This is a Spanish 1€ coin. スペインの1ユーロ硬貨です。

I think this one is German. この1ユーロ硬貨はドイツのだと思います。

This one has a pretty design, but I have no idea which country it’s from.

これはデザインは可愛いのですが、どこの国のものなのかさっぱりわかりません。

However, you can use any coin in any country, regardless of the design on the back.

ただし、裏面のデザインに関係なく、どの国のコインでもOKです。
