Understanding and reading foreign prices

先週の記事で紹介したように、多くの外貨は2つの通貨単位を持っています。

As I mentioned in last week’s article, many foreign currencies have 2 units of value.

例えば、イギリスにはポンドとペンスがあります。

For example, in the UK there are pounds and pence. 

This is 1 pound: これは1ポンドです。

This is 1 penny: これは1ペニーです。

The plural of “penny” is irregular. 「ペニー 」の複数形は不規則です。

1 penny, 2 pence

1ペニー、2ペンス

100ペンス＝1ポンド

100 pence = 1 pound

記号は、£はポンド、pはペンスです。

The symbols are £ pound and p pence.

Let’s look at some examples: いくつかの例を見てみましょう。

猫におもちゃを買いたいので、アマゾンで検索します。

I want to buy a toy for my cat, so I search on Amazon.

このおもちゃのボールの価格は、29.99ポンドです。

The price of this toy ball is £29.99

This means 29 pounds and 99 pence. つまり、29ポンド、99ペンスです。

“ . ” の前の数字がポンド、“ . ” の後の数字がペンスです。

The number before the “ . ” is the pounds, and the number after the “ . ” is the pence.

IMPORTANT! 重要!

“ . ” を発音しないでください !

Do not pronounce the “ . ”  !

価格を言う場合、「 . 」は言いません。

When saying prices, the “ . ” is not said:

£29.99 = twenty nine pounds and ninety-nine pence

もちろん、価格ではなく普通の数字であれば、” . ” は “point” と発音します。

Of course, if it’s a normal number (not a price), the “ . ” is pronounced “point”:

29.99 = twenty nine point ninety-nine

Say it quickly! 早く言いましょう！

「twenty nine pounds and ninety-nine pence」 は言うのに時間がかかるので、ネイティブスピーカーは通常これを短縮します。

“twenty nine pounds and ninety-nine pence” takes a long time to say, so native speakers usually shorten it.

There are two ways of shortening it:　短くする方法は2つあります。

1. “Twenty nine pounds, ninety-nine”

2. “Twenty nine, ninety-nine”

この最後の方法が最も一般的です。

This last way is the most common.

Some more examples: さらにいくつかの例を挙げます。

Some food for my cat: 猫の餌を少し。

The price is £10.34. 価格は10.34ポンドです。

“Ten pounds and thirty-four pence”

OR

“Ten pounds, thirty-four”

OR

“Ten, thirty-four”

Cheaper prices 安価な価格

このキュウリは、イギリスの有名なスーパーマーケット「セインズベリー」のものです。

This cucumber is from the famous UK supermarket Sainsbury’s.

価格は69ペンスです。

The price is 69 pence.

これは「69ペンス」or「69p」と言います。

This is said “69 pence” OR “69 p“.

Other currencies その他の通貨

値段を言うのは、アメリカのお金でも同じ形式をとっています。

Saying prices follows the same format in American money.

もちろん、アメリカではドルとセントが使われています。

Of course, in America they use dollars and cents.

This is 1 dollar: これは1ドルです。($)

This is 1 cent: これは1セントです。(¢)

100 cents = 1 dollar

100セント＝1ドル

This cat hoodie costs $15.46. この猫パーカーは15.46ドルです。

That’s fifteen dollars and forty-six cents.

もちろん、これを短縮することも可能です。

Of course, you can shorten this to:

fifteen dollars, forty-six

OR

fifteen, forty-six

This last way is the most common. この最後の方法が最も一般的です。

The limes are 38¢ (38 cents)、the lemons are 44¢ (44 cents)。

ライムは38セント、レモンは44セントです。
