Reading long numbers in English

ご存知のように、数字を日本語から英語へ、または英語から日本語へ翻訳するのは複雑です。

As you know, translating numbers from Japanese to English and vice-versa can be complicated.

ビジネスでは長い数字を扱うことが多いので、正確に読み、言えることが大切です。小さなミスが、会社を成功から倒産に導くこともあるのです。

In business you will often have to deal with long numbers, so it’s important to be able to read and say them accurately. A small mistake can make the difference between a company being successful and going bankrupt.

今回は、英語の数字が読みにくい理由を説明した上で、長い数字を素早く読み、言うためのコツを紹介します。

In this article I will explain why English numbers are difficult to read, and then I will give some tips for reading and saying long numbers quickly.

1）日本の数字と英語の数字の変換はなぜ難しいのか？

Why is it so difficult to translate between Japanese numbers and English numbers?

日本の数字は、4つのゼロ毎に単位があります。

Japanese numbers are named in groups of multiples of 4 zeros:

一方、英語の数字には、3つのゼロ毎に単位があります。

On the other hand, English numbers are named in groups of multiples of 3 zeros:

この表でわかるように、英語と日本語で単位がずれています（兆を除く）。

As you can see in this table, the English names and Japanese names are out of alignment (except for one trillion).

2）英数字の早読み方法

How to read English numbers quickly

頭の中で日本語から英語（またはその逆）に数字を翻訳しようとするのは難しいので、これはやめておきましょう。

Trying to translate numbers from Japanese to English (or vice-versa) in your head is difficult, so don’t do this.

その代わり、ネイティブスピーカーがするように、コンマを探します。

Instead, do what native speakers do, and look for the commas.

上の表でわかるように、英語を母国語とする人が数字を書くときは、コンマで3つのグループに分けられます。

As you can see in the table above, when native English speakers write numbers, they are divided into groups of 3 by commas.

これらのコンマは、数字を読みやすくするために重要です。

These commas are important because they help you read the number easily.

下の数字を見てください。

Take a look at the number below:

赤いコンマは “thousand”と読む

青いコンマは “million”と読みます。

The red comma is read “thousand”

The blue comma is read “million”

では、左から右へ読むと

So, reading from left to right:

= One million, eight hundred and thirty-seven thousand, four hundred and twenty-nine

長い数字は、ネイティブスピーカーでも想像しにくいものです。もし、国際的な場面で長い数字を言わなければならない場合（例えば、価格交渉や業績に関するプレゼンテーションなど）、数字を書き出してみましょう。特に、様々な国の人がいて、それぞれの言語が異なる方法で数字を表現する場合、この方法が効果的です。

Long numbers are difficult even for native speakers to imagine. If you are in an International situation where you have to say long numbers (for example, negotiating prices, or giving a presentation on business performance), write the numbers down! This will make it easier for everyone, and is especially true for situations where there are people from many different countries whose languages each name numbers in different ways.

交渉時に価格の話をする場合は、メモ帳とペンを持っておき、数字を書いてみんなに見せましょう。コンマを入れれば、わかりやすくなります。

If you’re discussing prices when negotiating, keep a notepad and pen with you, and write the numbers and show everyone else. Putting commas in will make it clear.

プレゼンテーションの場合は、すべての数字をホワイトボード、またはパワーポイントのスライドに記載します。

If you’re giving a presentation, put all numbers on the whiteboard, or on powerpoint slides.
