Rule 1: ルール1

Firstly, most years are said in groups of two digits:

If the year ends in “00”, this is said “hundred”:

Ever since the year 2000, English speakers aren’t really sure how to say the years. 

2000年以降、英語圏の人は年をどう言っていいかよくわからなくなりました。

“Twenty hundred” doesn’t sound right for “2000”, so we all just collectively decided to say “two thousand”. Sometimes we say “the year two thousand”, just to make it clear.

「2000年」を“Twenty hundred”と言うのはおかしいので、“two thousand”と言うことにしました。時には、はっきりさせるために“the year two thousand”と言うこともあります。

2000 = two thousand OR the year two thousand

2001 – 2009

In 2001 we all decided to say “two thousand (and) one”.

2001年、私たちは皆、“two thousand (and) one”と言うことにしました。

(Americans say “two thousand one”, whereas British speakers say “two thousand and one”)

（アメリカ人は“two thousand one”と言うけど、イギリス人は“two thousand and one”と言います。）

No one knows the reason for this. We could say “twenty oh one”… but hardly anyone says this. “two thousand (and) one” just sounds better to native speakers, I guess.

この理由は誰も知りません。“twenty oh one” と言うこともできるのですが、これを言う人はほとんどいません。ネイティブスピーカーには、”two thousand (and) one” の方が自然に聞こえるのでしょう。

You don’t have to say “the year two thousand (and) one”. Just “two thousand and one” is fine.

わざわざ“the year two thousand (and) one”と言わなくてもいい。ただ “two thousand (and) one “でいいんです。

2010 onwards 2010年以降

So 2010 should be “two thousand (and) ten”, but by this time some native speakers decided that this takes a long time to say, and it would be easier to say “twenty ten”. Some people still continue to say “two thousand (and) ten” however.

だから2010年は “two thousand (and) ten” となるはずですが、この頃になると、これでは時間がかかるから”twenty ten”と言う方が簡単だと考えるネイティブスピーカーも出てきました。しかし、今でも”two thousand (and) ten”と言い続けている人がいます。

Both ways are ok, but increasingly native speakers use the second way because it’s easier.

どちらの方法でもいいのですが、ネイティブスピーカーは2番目の方法の方が簡単なので、2番目の方法を使う人が増えています。

English is evolving all the time, and it may be the case that in a few years everyone will use the second way.

英語は常に進化しているので、数年後には誰もが2番目の方法を使うようになるかもしれません。
