It depends on the country! 国によって違うんです!

If you do business with foreigners, or if you spend some time abroad for business or study, it’s important to understand the date format. The way the date is written abroad is different from Japan. Also, it differs depending on the country. If you don’t want to miss an appointment, keep reading!

1) First of all, when you say the date, you need to use ordinal numbers:

*When writing the year, we usually write all 4 digits. However, it’s ok just to write the last 2.

5) Confusion! 混乱!

Obviously, this can get confusing when British people and American people work together.

明らかに、イギリス人とアメリカ人が一緒に仕事をすると、混乱することがあります。

One time I was working at Berlitz in Japan. My Australian coworker wanted to take a day off work, so she filled in a form and left it on the boss’s desk. She wanted to take off the 6th of August. 

あるとき、日本のベルリッツで働いていたことがあります。オーストラリア人の同僚が仕事を休みたいというので、書類に記入して上司のデスクに置いていきました。彼女は8月6日に休みたかったのです。

Australians use the British way of writing the date:

オーストラリア人は、イギリス式の日付の書き方をします。

So my coworker wrote: そこで、同僚がこう書いた

6 / 8 / 2019

6 = 6th, 8 = August

Makes sense, right? 理にかなっているでしょ？

However, our boss was American. So to him, dates are written:

しかし、私たちの上司はアメリカ人でした。だから、彼にとっては、日付はこう書くものなのです。

MONTH / DAY / YEAR 月／日／年

So when he saw “6 / 8 / 2019”, can you guess what day he thought my coworker wanted to take off?

だから、「6 / 8 / 2019」を見たとき、彼は同僚が何日に休みたがっていると思ったか、わかりますか？

That’s right, June 8th!

If you write the first 3 letters of the month, everyone will understand which is the month, and which is the day.

I’m British, so I mean the British way. It’s better to write this:
